About the workshop

We follow the wood, not the ruler.

Riven Wood is a small workshop. Every log is opened by hand with wedge, froe and club. No straight cuts: the timber splits along its own grain, and we carve what it already wants to be.

Split, not sawn

Every fibre stays whole, so even a thin spoon stays strong for years.

Local timber

Cherry, birch, beech and maple, from fallen or managed trees close to the workshop.

Slow by choice

Carved, dried and oiled by hand. No two pieces come out the same.

  1. 01

    The log

We choose a fresh, green log with straight grain: fibres running end to end, unbroken.

  2. 02

    The wedge

A steel wedge goes into a crack in the end grain. Nothing is cut. The wood is only asked to open.

  3. 03

    The split

The log opens along its weakest line and shows its true grain, knots and all.

  4. 04

    The blank

The axe roughs one half into a blank, with handle and bowl laid along the fibres.

  5. 05

    The spoon

Knife and hook knife finish the shape. Every fibre still runs whole from handle to bowl.
